PRESS 3. – 4.7.2015                                      3 – 4 JULY 2015, SONKAJÄRVI, FINLAND

RELEASE 5  – 2015                                    FREE TO RELEASE

Last Year’s Winners Surprised by the Publicity

Wife Carrying Requires Mutual Trust

Ville Parviainen and Janette Oksman, Vantaa, won the last year’s Wife Carrying World Championship by surprise and with tight marginal. The English couple coming second, Rich Blake Smith and Anna Marguerite Smith, lost only by 0.7 seconds. Taisto Miettinen, Kauniainen, and Kristiina Haapanen, Helsinki, who won the year before the last, lost their second chance at the championship only by 0.9 seconds. The second time told the truth: Parviainen and Oksman had participated in the championships also the year before.

– The championships last year were our fourth, and we rehearsed only once before the championships weekend. Wife Carrying interests us but it is still unsure whether we have the time to defend our title this year. We are fine, and the carrier is in good shape. CrossFit training is beneficial also for this sport. We’ll know closer to the championships, and we will surely be participating in the future.

Parviainen and Oksman were surprised by the amount of attention they got.

– The championship brought surprisingly much publicity, especially abroad. It caught us completely unaware, says Janette Oksman.

Wife Carrying Inspired

The actively exercising and fit couple sees also other factors behind their victory.

– Wife Carrying forces one to trust that the carrier actually carries and doesn’t drop the one being carried. Ville is 191 cm long, so it is actually quite frightening to hang upside down so high and in high speed, admits Janette.

Both Parviainen and Oksman do sports actively and professionally.

– We both do CrossiFit and are physical education instructors. Ville is a CrossFit trainer and substitutes PE teachers. I work in Helsinki as the physical education manager of the sports club Puistolan urheilijat. We are also an actual couple, Janette tells to the Eukonkanto Magazine.

Wife Carrying Championships are arranged in Sonkajärvi for the 20th time, and have once more drawn attention from around the world. 56 couples from 12 different countries have signed up for the competition. The theme of this year’s event is forest and the programme includes alongside the competition a first-rate forest seminar “Ettenpäen mäntyä”.

The inventor of the idea of Wife Carrying and the chief executive of Eukonkanto Oy Eero Pitkänen believes the number of contestants will grow and according to Eero competitors are received although the number is nearly record-breaking. Reporters for the event are coming from among other countries from England, from which two BBC journalists will compete, as well as several videobloggers
- Three pairs enter the race at a time so that the competition doesn’t stretch for too long. Competitors are participating to different series from Russia, France, the United States, Belgium, Germany, Norway, Estonia, Japan, Mexico, England, and even from Australia, states Eero Pitkänen.

The theme of the event is Local food – come taste local treats. According to Pitkänen, the local area’s food culture is emphasized.
- The Wife Carrying event has a local food buffet and plenty of sales places from where you can buy local delicacies. With the event is the “North-Savonian flavors on their way to internationality”-project. In addition, local fashion is on display via fashion shows and exhibitions, says Pitkänen.

Last year’s champion Taisto Miettinen with his partner Kristiina Haapanen are ready to defend their championship title. Miettinen, with his hobbies ranging from Wife Carrying to extreme sports, originally gained interest from a company’s summer event, where the sport was wife carrying. Earlier he had seen the sport from images in the news.
- There was a wife carrying competition and the main prize was participation. The sport seemed fun and at the same time quite heavy. I got excited about it quickly. I won overwhelmingly and that’s how it’s been, recalls Miettinen from the start of his competitive career.

The Wife Carrying event lasts two days. The Wife Carrying sprint, Wife Carrying run, Wife Carrying karaoke semifinals and market dance are being held on Friday. Saturday begins with the team competition at 13 o’clock and the World Championships are at 15 o’clock. Abundant music is included on both days.
